My Experience With the Apple Wireless Keyboard
A few months ago, I bought the Apple Wireless Keyboard to compliment my Macbook Pro and external display. Sitting so close to my computer’s display — as anyone does when using laptop — had given me a bad posture and probably worse eyesight. What I wanted to do was place my notebook further back, and at head level, requiring me to sit up and fix my gaze further away from where I was sitting. Plus, I could finally use my much larger external display as my primary display and face it directly.
With these ergonomics and health issues in mine, I bought the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Magic Mouse. Now, I sit much further back from my displays and I’m no longer bent over staring downwards.
Design and Style
The Apple Wireless Keyboard is a compact and sleek looking device that closely resembles the keyboards used in the Apple Macbook Pro and Macbook Air. If you’re wondering why Apple would use a laptop style keyboard for a desktop one, then you’ve probably never used an Apple keyboard before. For many people, a smaller keyboard with island or ‘chiclet’ keys is simply easier and more accurate to type on — I couldn’t agree more.
Small Keyboards Are Great
Before using the Apple Wireless Keyboard, I hadn’t realized how large and bulky most other desktop keyboards were; the footprint of this keyboard is almost 50% smaller than my previous PC keyboard (a Logitech). Even on my spacious L-shaped desk, which admittedly has plenty of free room, having such a compact device has its advantages. For instance, the keyboard can be pushed around the desk with a single hand (or finger). Whenever I am eating at my desk or need space for printed documents, I can move the keyboard aside without much effort.
Build Quality
After a few months of daily use, I can attest that the Apple Wireless Keyboard remains a robust unit that has not seemingly tarnished with frequent abuse. The aluminum casing and white plastic keys is both elegant and minimalist in nature, but also easy to clean. There are no frills or gimmicks like rows of custom buttons and annoying lights that you’ll find on other models. The device is simple and small, and probably less likely to break for these reasons.
Conclusion
Apple has learned how to make great keyboards, and it’s no surprise that the Apple Wireless Keyboard is simply the best keyboard I have ever owned. In the past, touch-typing was always a problem on larger full-sized keyboards, but with Apple’s current design, I find my fingers hitting the keys with greater accuracy and speed. I don’t know how common this story is, but I never bothered to touch type before switching to exclusively using laptops. And now with the Apple Wireless Keyboard, I can keep this useful habit even when I’m at my desktop.
Price and Where To Buy
Although slightly pricey, the Apple Wireless keyboard is worth its cost. When you think about it, most people control everything they do on their computer through only two devices: the mouse and keyboard. Why cheap out on either device? For me, the best keyboard is the Apple Wireless Keyboard. I couldn’t imagine using anything else. Paired with the Apple Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad, this is the best combo for controlling a Mac. Not because they are Apple branded product, but because they have been thoughtfully designed and are quality products that are currently unmatched in the market, Mac or otherwise.
You can find the Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Mouse or Magic Trackpad on Amazon, often at cheaper prices than what you’ll find at the Apple Store.
