Bad iPod Nano 4G: Sharp Edges and Auto Cover Flow

ipod nano 4g

Having used the iPod Nano 4G for a few days now, I can definitely say that my foreboding over its sharp corners was quite warranted. When reaching into my jeans pocket to get a hold of the device, I find myself poking my palm and fingers more often than naught, and it’s really beginning to irritate me!

I think, essentially, there are two kinds of music listeners: those that press play and hardly touch their mp3 player while on the move, and those that are constantly adjusting the volume and skipping to different tracks. I definitely fit the latter category, so it is especially annoying having to take extra caution when reaching for the Nano 4G.

Another feature that I am dreading is the tilt sensor. When holding the Nano 4G in my fist down by my side, the unit lies naturally in a landscape position. This automatically puts the Nano 4G into Cover Flow mode, which makes the click wheel flip through albums instead of controlling the volume. I find this very annoying as I often adjust sound levels blindly when the player is clutched in my hand or even when it’s inside my pocket. Now, I have to hold the Nano upwards and take a glance at the screen to make sure it’s out of Cover Flow before making an adjustment. That’s two steps too many, if you ask me.

Some of you might suggest that the iPod Shuffle is a better unit for my needs, but I cannot live without a display. Part of what makes the Nano so great is the embedded OS X, which provides an excellent user interface for making quick selections amidst gigs of music. Also, I enjoy giving ratings to my music; the included 5-star system a great way to keep tabs on my current favorites.

I realize now that the old Nano 3G is superior to the 4G in almost every respect, but as I’m stuck with the 4G until the next upgrade cycle, I’m hoping to find some workarounds to my problems. For instance, a case would probably cover the sharp edges of the Nano 4G and would also add a bit of bulk to the device for better gripping (was this Apple’s plan all along?). Also, a firmware update to deactivate the automatic Cover Flow mode sounds like a possibility if enough people complain. I hope that I’m not the only one with this concern — add a comment if you’re with me!

I am with you on the automatic cover flow mate :)

I don’t know what all the fuss was about with the Fatty model. I guess the Apple hardcore associate good looks with tall and lean, too bad it’s not ideal for their current design.

Yes. the cover flow gets irritating. I prefer not to put it on hold as I can change the songs easily but it flips around in my pocket and the backlight never gets to go off.

Otherwise, I love everything about it. Especially it’s curves and slim design

I have found that If you are playing music then hit the sleep button. This will turn off the display (thus saving power) and make it so coverflow doesn’t come up. You shouldn’t be walking around with your iPod touch’s display on, it would only get about 5 hours of use. Hope this is helpful!!

I hope that you realize that you can turn off the automatic Cover-flow feature in the settings. I really like the curved edges tho. For for me Nano 4G = Epic Win.

Got a new 4G for Christmas. I’m already hacked off with the sharp corners; holding the ipod in my hand has made my palm sore in a few hours of use. I imagine it will slice through trouser pockets in a matter of days. Also I was very annoyed to discover unlike my old 2G, the new 4G will not charge in my Bose Soundock (or many other speaker systems, it transpires). My 2G lasted less than 2 years before the screen broke and I only replaced it with another ipod to make use of existing accessories. At this moment I am not a happy bunny, despite the extra bling of the 4G.

I do find auto-cover flow to annoying, but the newest firmware lets you disable it. The sharp corners thing seems to be a very minor gripe at best though.

The sharp corners thing as far as im concerned is overzealous, sore/stabbed palms just seems unreasonable, unless you’re really jamming your hand hard into your pocket? Keys are sharp, but i’ve never impaled myself on those when grabbing them from my trousers, even when drunk.

I agree that the 4G nano feels a bit too small though, very lightweight, thin, as if it would break, I had a 2G nano and bailed off a go-kart when drunk once, skidding down a hill with only my iPod between my leg and the tarmac, my jeans suffered, the iPod suffered (but still worked, just looked a bit rugged) but hey my leg was fine, happy days.

I have to say I prefer the design of the 3G nanos though, they’re more like a miniature standard iPod, if only apple had released a 16Gb model
