Macha Latte - My Coffee Alternative

A couple weeks ago, I walked into a coffee shop during the evening hours on my way home from shopping. There was no one else in line, so I didn’t feel particularly rushed and I took a moment to ask the girl behind the counter what would be a good alternative to my regular cup of organic dark roast coffee.

She called out an exhaustive list of specialties and flavored drinks, but nothing really caught my attention. Then, she mentioned the macha latte, which I was sort of familiar with from my favorite summertime drink, the macha chillo. After serving up a cup, I gave it a sip and was immediately impressed by its sweet, creamy taste with just a slight hint of bitterness.

Macha is green tea powder, and for the latte, it is mixed with hot water and whisked in a bowl until it is completely dissolved. Then, the mixture is slowly added to hot milk and often sweetened with honey, sugar or vanilla syrup.

One thing that I have noticed from ordering this drink, now from several different coffee shops, is the inconsistency in which it’s prepared (at least around here). Some places will serve it unsweetened and bitter, whilst others will sweeten it without asking – sometimes over doing it! Also, like all good lattes, the macha latte should be served frothy with the powder completely mixed in; but already, I’ve had a few of them that were rushed. These ill prepared concoctions looked and tasted like green milk, so I guess it is best to stick to places that have proven to make it right. Unfortunately, getting the drink served right often comes down to the individual server that is preparing it, which makes the whole affair a bit hit-and-miss, I’m afraid…

What’s your favorite coffee alternative?

Mmm… Looks like Japanese machas. I think i’m gonna head out and get one for lunch! I’m also big into white chocolate mochas but I gotta really watch the calories…

I think quality coffee beverages are found in places that have good import connections and a proven method. I know when i make coffee at home it’s pretty much different everytime. You just can’t trust the small mom and pops to be consistent when making drinks. At Starbucks the kids are just told to push this and time that and bingo a coffee is made. Even then, it’s not consistent. I had a French Vanilla Latte the other day that tasted like the kid had tried to make it suck. He was light in the sugar department and in the loafers, but most of them are at Starbucks.

I know how you feel. The first time you walk in, you are pleasantly surprised at the drink they serve you. Then the next time you go, you have the same expectations, but you are horribly disappointed! Too watery, too sweet, too bitter, too… something. Even the machine made Tim Horton’s hot chocolate is a total hit-and-miss affair.

I was actually trying to cut coffee out of my diet completely, unfortunately there are few alternatives to the jolt that coffee gives you and that dark roasted taste. I’ve never had macha before but my favorite alternative to coffee is called Yerba Mate. It can be served in green and dark roasted varieties. It’s a leaf typically found in South America that I found by accident while upstate New York. Although many people switch to the roasted variety because of it’s slight similarity to coffee I’m prefer the green variety that’s supposed to boast a ton of antioxidants. It has caffeine in it but doesn’t produce the jittery side effects and lasts a lot longer than coffee without the crash. Try it! I prefer the loose kind better, it has a richer flavor.
